1.    Goal of the project

1.1.    Short term

Goal of the project is to give children the opportunity to get familiar and read good children books which are easily accessible in their own environment. Target group is children living in children homes and children patients in hospitals in children department.  They will get their own bookshelf with several children books.  Books will be chosen from different countries and they all are translated in Lithuanian language. Bookshelves will be produced by deaf school in Vilnius and will be decorated by different artistic figures under the guidance of Lithuanian famous artist Sigute Ach.  Short term target is to donate bookshelves with books for 10 children homes until summer 2010.

 1.2   Long term

Long term goal of the project is to continue project for getting bookshelves to be donated for 100 children home and hospital department in Lithuania.  This should be ready during 2011, 2012 Rotary year.

2.    Detailed description of the project

Deaf school in Vilnius will produce needed 100 pcs. of bookshelves according drawings.  All the bookshelves will be similar size and painted with same color.  All the bookshelves will be later on decorated with different artistic decorations painted by children and volunteers under the guidance of Sigute Ach. She will organize painting sessions for children in her studio. Every session will take time about three hours. Vilnius International Rotary club will participate in painting during one evening in April/May in Sigute's studio.

All the children homes and hospital children departments will be listed and contacted by nominated persons. The list will be prioritized in order for donations by project team.

Sigute Ach in cooperation of project team has made a list of most suitable books from different countries for purchasing. 40 different children books have been already selected to be in one bookshelf. It has proposed to have 3 pcs of each book in the self so 120 books is the normal loading of books.

As a joint project also Rotary Interact will participate actively in the project by collecting as donations old books for the project. Some books from these ones will be added to get the bookshelf filled before donation.

3.    Benefit of the project

To activate children for reading books and enrich their world and imagination.  To offer children also change to participate in painting session together with Sigute Ach and get familiar with artistic work. For children in hospital we believe books will give them a lot of joy and more interesting, purposeful way to spend time in hospital.

4.    Project beneficiaries

As beneficiaries of this project will be seen all children in children homes and in children departments in hospitals. Children homes will get change to offer children good books for their upbringing process.

5.    Participants (sponsors)

Vilnius International Rotary Club should decide their donation for project.

Donations for bookshelves should be collected also from other Rotary clubs in Lithuania. Basic principle could be that the local Rotary club where children homes are located should participate in the project

Rotary clubs of those countries where the children books are originated should be challenged to donate money for purchasing books from Lithuania. Responsible persons will be nominated to contact Rotary clubs in those countries.
